Ask any Bengaluru resident about their go-to havens for seeking momentary refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city and the likely responses would include Cubbon Park or Lalbagh. These two renowned green spaces act as the first line of defense for those yearning to experience the calmness and natural allure amidst the bustling city. Any visit to Bengaluru would be considered incomplete without exploring these iconic green havens that are integral to the city’s identity.

However, speak to an avid city explorer and you would be surprised to learn that the outskirts of the city is dotted with a good number of these urban oasis. Being further from the city means they are less crowded and support a larger diversity of flora and fauna.

One such conversation with a fellow traveler led me to discover the Avalahalli State Forest (a.k.a Jarakabande Kaval). Located just 20 KM from the city center, Avalahalli State Forest lies just north of Bangalore, off the road towards Doddaballapura. This mixed deciduous forest bordering wetlands, farmlands and settlements is predominantly a plantation of silver oak, eucalyptus, and acacia.

The Fauna on the other hand is more diverse. The Avian residents of the forest and the surrounding area provide immense opportunity for budding and experienced birders alike. Having recently ventured into photographing birds in their natural habitat, this find could not have come at a better time.

If you are looking to gain deeper insights into the various bird species commonly found in this forest, I recommend reading this exceptional and incredibly informative article written by Devayani Khare. It offers a valuable and enlightening perspective on the avian diversity within this region

Due to the numerous unpaved cycling and walking trails, the forest is also a favorite among joggers and cyclists. The absence of markers indicating routes or directions adds to the excitement as one goes about exploring the forest at their own pace. It goes without saying that this location serves as an excellent opportunity to introduce children to the wonders of nature. Oh, and did I mention that you can also witness breathtaking sunsets from the outskirts of the forest?

Timings are from 6 am to 9 am and from 3 pm to 6 pm and as of writing this article, there is an entry fee of Rs.10 for adults and Rs.25 for cycling. Pets are not allowed.

So next time you’re seeking to fulfill your longing for greenery, look no further than Avalahalli State Forest. I assure you that your visit will be incredibly rewarding.
